Don’t Let Eye Diseases Put Your Vision at Risk

Many eye diseases can significantly affect your vision and eye health, placing you at risk of severe vision loss. You may assume signs of these issues are easy to notice, but many diseases can develop with few symptoms if any!

While eye disease poses a risk to your vision, we can help identify problems before they cause damage. We can diagnose eye disease during a comprehensive eye exam before recommending an effective treatment plan for your visual needs.

An Early Diagnosis Can Protect Your Vision

We look for signs of eye disease during every eye exam we conduct. Taking an in-depth look at your eye’s internal structures allows us to catch eye disease in its earliest stages, helping protect your vision.

An early diagnosis is crucial because many eye diseases don’t show symptoms until your vision is affected. The earlier we diagnose eye disease, the lower the risk of vision loss. We can recommend treatments to manage your symptoms and prevent future damage.

Common Eye Diseases

Many eye diseases are more common with age. Without proper treatment, you risk severe damage to your eyes and vision. While these diseases can cause severe vision loss, we can help treat these problems and protect your eye health and vision.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is exactly what it sounds like—the progressive decay of your macula, the part of the eye responsible for central vision. Forward vision declines while peripheral (side) vision stays the same.

There are 2 forms of AMD: dry and wet. Dry AMD occurs when the tissue within the macula thins. You gradually lose the light-sensitive cells needed for your central vision. With time, you may struggle to read or drive, depending on the severity of your condition.

Wet AMD occurs when blood vessels leak blood and fluid in the macula. This condition can progress rapidly and damage your vision. Visit us for emergency treatment if you notice sudden changes in your central vision.

A cataract is the clouding of your eye’s lens, typically caused by age. Cataracts develop slowly, affecting your ability to see until you struggle to read, drive, or recognize your loved one’s facial expressions.

Cataracts won’t affect your eyesight at first, but with time, you will require treatment. Many people require cataract surgery once this condition has significantly impacted their vision.

Glaucoma is a group of progressive eye diseases that damage the optic nerve. Without proper treatment, glaucoma can cause severe and permanent vision loss. Because this disease can develop without visible symptoms, early diagnosis is crucial for treating glaucoma.

Many, but not all forms of glaucoma cause an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP). In every eye exam, we test for signs of glaucoma using tonometry to measure your internal eye pressure.

The common forms of glaucoma include:

  • Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma: Primary open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of this disease, caused by fluid building up in the eye that leads to increased IOP.
  • Angle-Closure Glaucoma: Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the drainage canals in the eye have a narrow opening, causing a risk of sudden pressure increase
  • Normal-Tension Glaucoma: Normal-tension glaucoma causes damage to the optic nerve without raising eye pressure.
